Welcome to the Autumn!
Yes, Autumn is here already. Considering how the year is flying, I thought I’d let you know that I’m not just skimming through 2017 on the way to better things. No, indeed.
Here’s what I’ve been up to recently:
Learning how to turn sketches into proper digital images. It’s amazing how much awesome free information is available out there on the interweb! Why am I doing this? Because I would like to illustrate my book, The Single Mother’s Little Helper, myself. Are you an artist? I hear you say. Most emphatically not, I reply. But I have aspirations towards art. What can I say, I’m going to give it a go. If the results are schrecklich (don’t you just love the sound of German? It really is a most descriptive language to speak and write. Full of nuance.), fear not! I will find someone who actually knows what they’re doing to replace my scribbles.
Submitting a proposal to my local university to enter their PhD program. Yes, it’s true. I have finally come to terms with the horrors of essay writing (after all, what’s a doctoral thesis but one long, really, long, essay?) – after all, I’ve written books on non-fiction topics. And researched for them. I think I can do it. I think I can, I know I can. What’s the subject, you say? Why, linguistics and education of course. Well, it’s through the School of Education, but the subject is primarily linguistic in nature. And thus, it appeals both to my bossy, teachery side and my geeky, linguistic inner soul. Not sole. No orthotic references here. Oops, too late. Anyway, I’d love to have the option of calling myself ‘Dr Emily M Morgan.’ Hey? Right? Has a nice ring! Also, I’d love to research further into the world of linguistics and maybe even contribute something towards improving communication on a global scale, or perhaps help the educators in my own country and others to deliver better teaching outcomes to the future generations. Seriously, I know it sounds like a pitch. But there it is. Mind you, I haven’t been accepted yet. Who knows?
Working on a late draft of a new children’s book, the first in a series. I’m liking it a lot. But history has shown that this is a poor indicator of publishing success, so we’ll see. I’m not holding my breath. But a girl can hope! Keep writing, keep improving.
Working on a new series of educational picture books. You know the ones, ‘First Trip to the Hospital,’ ‘Why Did My Pet Die?’ That sort of thing. Only this series on a particular theme. More on that down the track.
Helping a couple of businesses to get their social media presence up and running. Yes, it’s true, I do this as well. After all, money has to come from somewhere and I don’t subscribe to the starving artist (word artist!) in a garret cliché. So I run a business, writing documents and copy for businesses and organizations. I’m not too shabby at it, either, in case you’re wondering. www.writtenapproach.com if you’d like to find out more.
Um, isn’t that enough?
What are you up to these days, gentle readers? And are you making sure that whatever it is, is making you happy? I’m not quite halfway through my life, according to my own imagined schedule, and I have quite a lot I’d like to do in that time. So I’m doing it. Are you?
