Today in Parents in the Know, we will investigate Smacking – a contentious form of disciplining your child. Why we do it? And the effect on this to your child and its alternatives.
Smacking is believed by a majority of parents in Australia to be an acceptable form of discipline. They cite their own experiences being smacked, and the behaviour of their children in the short and long term, when they are smacked. People believe that smacking teaches children to behave and has no long term or immediate negative consequences. However, scientists have another view, based on numerous studies over many years. Today, Emily M Morgan explores the science and the opinion behind smacking.
Smacking along with other types of physical discipline has been around since before we had words to describe it. Some advocates of smacking quote passages from the Bible, such as “spare the rod and spoil the child,” from Proverbs, which can be dated to 900 BC or possibly even earlier – due to the oral tradition which these proverbs come from, it is impossible to know for sure.
